Prompt variants
Prompt variants test question wording.
Use them when you want to see whether a better buyer question gives more useful visibility data. This is not the same as improving your website. It improves what the experiment watches.
Prompt change under test
Write the old and new prompt if both matter.
## Prompt variant Old: "What are AI SEO tools?" New: "Which AI visibility tools help SaaS teams track ChatGPT mentions and sources?" Reason: the new question is closer to a buyer decision.
Narrow change
Change one prompt idea at a time.
If you change the question, the schedule, and the page content at the same time, you will not know what caused the new result.
Save the old question
Keep the original wording visible.
Write the new question
Make the buyer intent clearer.
Keep timing stable
Do not change schedule at the same time.
Compare answer quality
Review whether the new prompt produces better evidence.
Change record
Prompt variants need notes.
If the new prompt is better, you may want to keep it. If it is worse, you may want to return to the old one.
Later comparison
Compare answer quality, not only mention count.
A prompt can produce more mentions but worse evidence. Read the full answer before deciding.
